England Needs Seven Months of Above-Average Rain to End Drought, Research Shows
Despite recent rainfall, nearly three-quarters of England remains in drought, with specific regions facing prolonged dry conditions.
England requires at least seven months of above-average rainfall to fully recover from the current drought conditions by spring 2027, according to new research cited by the Environment Agency (EA). Despite some precipitation in early September, nearly 75% of England is still experiencing drought following an unusually dry spring and summer, exacerbated by heatwaves.
The EA estimates that approximately 120% of typical rainfall is needed between now and April to bring all affected areas out of drought. Even with a wetter-than-normal autumn, as predicted by the Met Office, regions like Devon, Cornwall, and East Anglia could still be in drought by the start of spring 2027. Current forecasts suggest a one-in-four chance that about half of England will remain in drought next spring, with a minimal 1% chance of a severe drought in the immediate months.
A severe drought, defined by the EA as having extensive and lasting impacts on the environment, agriculture, communities, and the economy, and potentially threatening public water supplies, has not been experienced in England since 1976.
Recent rainfall has provided some relief, but groundwater levels and reservoir storage across England remain low. Last week, reservoir storage stood at just under 57%, a fifth below the usual level for this time of year. EA Chief Executive Philip Duffy emphasized the seriousness of the drought situation, stating, "We cannot underestimate the challenge ahead over the coming months." He added, "A few weeks of rain cannot reverse the deficit we face from the very dry spring and summer. We still need everyone to use a little less water to speed up the drought recovery."
In Scotland, recent rainfall has not fully counteracted the effects of prolonged dry spells in some eastern areas, leading to significant water scarcity declarations in four regions. The entirety of Wales is also still under drought status. Significant water scarcity is officially declared when river flows consistently fall below a recognized low flow threshold for 30 consecutive days.
Looking ahead, the short-term weather forecast includes some rain in southeastern England on Thursday, with showers expected in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England. Blustery conditions are also anticipated. Patchy rain is forecast to spread from the west on Friday, followed by showers in the northwest on Saturday and in the south. By Sunday, rainfall is expected to ease, leading to generally dry and settled conditions into the following week.
The Met Office's longer-term outlook indicates a higher probability of a wetter-than-average autumn. The current El Niño, which is near record levels, is a contributing factor to this forecast. Historically, El Niño events have been linked to warmer, wetter, and stormier weather in the UK during late autumn and early winter. While increased rainfall could aid drought recovery, periods of heavy rain also carry a risk of flooding. The EA notes that floodwater is often difficult to store for public water supply due to its rapid arrival and potential for high sediment and nitrate content washed from the land.
