Britain may experience a "bumper summer of butterflies" this year, according to Professor Richard Fox, head of science at the UK charity Butterfly Conservation. He attributes this potential increase to an "incredibly warm, dry spring and this ongoing hot weather," which he states puts butterflies in a prime position to "put on a fantastic, colourful show in our gardens and countryside this summer."
Professor Fox expressed hope that many people will participate in the Big Butterfly Count, an initiative that encourages the public to record the number of butterflies they see over a 15-minute period. He noted that while individuals might observe only a few butterflies in their gardens during this time, visiting areas rich in flowers could yield sightings of "dozens or even hundreds."
