Britain experienced its hottest ever June day on June 24, 2026, as temperatures reached a blistering 35.8C.
Record-Breaking Temperatures
The 50-year record was first surpassed in Charlwood, Surrey, where the mercury hit 35.7C, exceeding the previous high of 35.6C set in 1976. Shortly after, a temperature of 35.8C was recorded in Wiggonholt, West Sussex. Forecasters had anticipated that the June record would be significantly broken due to a "heat dome" trapping warmth over Britain and Europe.
The highest maximum temperature ever officially recorded by a UK weather station remains 40.3C, registered at the Coningsby weather station in Lincolnshire on July 19, 2022.
Interactive Heatwave Tool
The Daily Mail has launched a search tool, powered by Open Meteo data, that utilizes Met Office weather statistics dating back to 1853. This tool allows residents to enter their postcode and discover if their specific area has experienced record-breaking temperatures during the current heatwave or if the sweltering conditions have fallen short of historical highs.
While some of the 168 Met Office weather stations used in the tool have comparable data spanning over a century, all have been operational since at least 1980.
