Younger Adults Drive Surge in UK Current Account Switches Amidst High Cash Incentives
Individuals aged 25-40 are nearly twice as likely to switch banks, with Birmingham leading the nation in account transfers as offers reach up to £220.
Individuals under the age of 40 are spearheading a significant increase in current account switching across the United Kingdom, according to data from the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) for the first quarter of 2026. This demographic, aged 25 to 40, was almost twice as likely to move their banking than the general population, accounting for 42% of all switches despite representing only 22% of the UK's population during the period.
Birmingham retained its position as the city with the highest number of current account switches, recording 8,179 transfers between January and March 2026. This marks the city's continued dominance in account switching, following its lead in the previous quarter. Other northern cities also featured prominently in the top five, with Newcastle in second place, followed by Sheffield and Manchester.
The surge in switching activity is closely linked to lucrative cash incentives offered by high street banks, with some deals reaching up to £220. These offers are designed to attract new customers, though eligibility criteria must be met. For instance, HSBC is offering £220 to new customers who haven't held an HSBC or First Direct account since January 1, 2023, provided they switch via CASS, set up at least two direct debits, deposit a minimum of £2,000 within 60 days, and spend £500 on their debit card in the same timeframe.
First Direct has enhanced its incentive to £200 until July 15, requiring a CASS switch with two direct debits within 45 days, a £1,000 deposit, at least five debit card uses, and a digital banking login. This bank operates without physical branches, emphasizing phone and online services, and is noted for strong customer service ratings. First Direct also offers a 7% regular savings account and no foreign debit card usage fees.
NatWest is providing £200 for switches to its everyday or reward current accounts. The reward account incurs a £2 monthly fee but offers £5 in monthly cashback for meeting specific direct debit and mobile app login criteria, totaling £36 annually. To qualify for the £200 bonus, customers must pay in at least £1,250 and log in to the app within 60 days of switching. However, customers who have previously received a switch incentive from the NatWest group, including Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank, are ineligible.
John Dentry, a product manager at Pay.UK, which operates CASS, highlighted the role of switching in supporting household finances amidst financial pressures. He noted that the competitive landscape fostered by switching encourages banks to offer various perks and deals. Despite a 43% increase in total switching in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year, CASS data indicates that account switching still represents a relatively small portion of the UK's adult population. The year 2025 marked the third consecutive year CASS recorded over one million switches, underscoring a sustained trend in customer mobility.
