Yen Slides Near 40-Year Low, Fueling Intervention Speculation
The dollar advanced against the yen, nearing a critical threshold that could prompt Japanese authorities to intervene in currency markets.

The U.S. dollar strengthened against the Japanese yen on Monday, reaching its highest level in nearly two years. The dollar climbed to 161.94 yen, a level not seen since July 2024. A move above 161.99 yen would mark the highest exchange rate for the dollar against the yen in approximately four decades.
Traders and market participants are closely watching for potential intervention by Japanese authorities. Historically, Japanese finance ministries have intervened to stabilize the yen when it weakens significantly, to prevent excessive volatility and protect the economy. The current weakening trend has heightened expectations that such action might be imminent, although the effectiveness of intervention in reversing a strong market trend is often debated.
