World Bank Watchdog Criticizes Cambodian Microfinance Lenders

An internal watchdog for the World Bank has found that microfinance lenders in Cambodia pressured borrowers who were unable to repay their loans, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The International Finance Corp. (IFC), the World Bank's private-sector arm, conducted the audit.

The watchdog determined that these lenders engaged in practices that harmed borrowers, particularly those struggling financially. The audit identified instances where borrowers were pressured to continue making payments even when they could not afford them, leading to increased debt and hardship.

Microfinance institutions have played a significant role in Cambodia's economy, providing small loans to individuals and businesses. However, concerns about high interest rates and aggressive collection practices have persisted. This report from the IFC's internal auditor highlights the negative impact these practices can have on vulnerable borrowers.
