Woman Loses $400 After Buying Fake Designer Handbag on Vinted
Buyer was unable to get a refund after accepting the order, despite a later authentication confirming the bag was counterfeit.
A woman purchased a Prada handbag for £400 on the resale platform Vinted, only to discover it was a counterfeit after the transaction was finalized. The buyer, who has not been publicly identified by name by the BBC, initially believed the bag to be authentic, especially after paying an additional £10 for an authentication service.
According to reports, the buyer accepted the order on Vinted, thereby releasing the payment to the seller and confirming the item's receipt, as per the platform's regulations. She stated that upon initial inspection, the handbag appeared normal and she was "absolutely 100% sure that it will be fine." However, her confidence wavered when she visited a Prada store at the Trafford Centre and could not find a similar handbag in their current collection. A store employee did not recognize the bag, prompting the buyer to seek an independent authentication.
The independent verification confirmed the handbag was fake. Because she had already accepted the order on Vinted, she was subsequently unable to obtain a refund. The buyer expressed shock at the realization that such counterfeit goods were being sold on the platform and that it was "too late to do anything about it."
A similar style of handbag from Prada retails for approximately £1,500 on the brand's official website. The incident highlights the risks associated with purchasing high-value items on peer-to-peer marketplaces, particularly when the buyer accepts the item before a thorough authentication process is completed.
