Weston Family Buys UK Pharmacy Chain Boots for $6.7 Billion
Wittington Investments, the holding company for the Canadian billionaire Weston family, has acquired the Boots Group in a deal valued at £6.7 billion.
The Weston family, a prominent Canadian business dynasty, has finalized the acquisition of the Boots Group for £6.7 billion. The deal was confirmed by Wittington Investments, the family's holding company, which will now oversee Boots' extensive retail operations across the UK and Ireland, along with its subsidiaries: Boots Opticians, No7 Beauty Company, and its franchised businesses in Thailand.
The Weston family is well-known in the UK for its ownership of Associated British Foods, which includes the fashion retailer Primark and the department store Fortnum & Mason. On the Canadian side, Wittington Investments also controls the grocery chain Loblaws and the pharmacy retailer Shoppers Drug Mart. The family previously divested their stake in the department store Selfridges in 2022 for £4 billion.
This acquisition marks the end of Boots' potential return to the public stock market after a 19-year absence, a move that had been anticipated to provide a significant boost to the financial sector.
Boots, which originated as a family herbal medicine shop in Nottingham in 1849, has been under the ownership of Sycamore Partners since August of the previous year. Sycamore Partners had acquired Boots as part of its £7.4 billion takeover of Walgreens Boots Alliance, subsequently creating the standalone Boots Group. Italian billionaire Stefano Pessina and his wife Ornella Barra, formerly major stakeholders in Walgreens Boots Alliance, retained a 44 percent interest in Boots.
Pessina expressed satisfaction with the transaction, calling Boots an "iconic brand and a British institution." He noted the privilege of his and his wife's association with Boots over the past two decades and stated their delight in passing the company to "strong and reliable owners who understand the value of its great heritage."
Galen Weston, who is slated to become the Chairman of Boots, emphasized the company's status as "one of Britain's most enduring businesses." He highlighted Boots' "rich heritage, a trusted name and a vital role in everyday life across the UK and Ireland." Weston added that the family sees "a meaningful opportunity to make a great business even better through stable long-term ownership, further capital investment, and the renewed operating focus required to serve customers with excellence for generations to come."
Wittington Investments' acquisition includes a partnership with Fairfax Financial Holdings, an entity with a diverse investment portfolio that includes stakes in companies like Simba Sleep.
