Wedding Gift Etiquette Evolves as Couples Favor Cash Funds Over Traditional Lists

The tradition of wedding gift lists is shifting as more couples opt for honeymoon funds or specific experience donations, presenting guests with a modern etiquette dilemma regarding the appropriate monetary contribution. While some couples still prefer tangible gifts, a growing number are providing bank transfer details, leading to uncertainty about expected gift amounts.

Wedding list service Prezola reports an increase in couples requesting contributions towards specific honeymoon experiences rather than general cash pots. The service indicates that the average guest contribution currently stands at £116. However, these figures can fluctuate significantly, influenced by factors such as the guest's proximity to the couple, cultural norms, and the overall cost of attending the wedding.

For some guests, the amount gifted is flexible and depends on their relationship with the bride and groom, as well as their financial circumstances at the time. One guest, Johnny, 34, stated that he and his wife typically contribute between £250 and £400. He noted that as they do not have a large circle of friends, they prefer to give generously when possible.

At his own wedding, Johnny recalled that close friends contributed between £100 and £200, with one couple giving £400. His father gifted £2,000. The couple utilized these funds for spending money during their 17-day honeymoon in Canada, a trip they had saved for independently, preferring not to rely solely on guest contributions.

The evolving landscape of wedding gifts acknowledges that the financial commitment for guests extends beyond the gift itself, often encompassing travel, accommodation, and even new attire. The shift towards monetary gifts and experience funds reflects a desire by couples to direct contributions towards specific goals, such as funding a honeymoon, while also simplifying the gifting process for guests who may find traditional gift registries less appealing or practical.
