Volkswagen Unveils Electric Tiguan with Upgraded Design and 370-Mile Range

Volkswagen has revealed its redesigned Tiguan SUV, which will transition to an all-electric platform for the 2027 model year. The new electric Tiguan is slated for release early next year and promises a driving range exceeding 370 miles on a single charge.

Volkswagen is positioning the electric Tiguan as one of its most significant electric models for the coming years. The vehicle has undergone a complete redesign to accommodate its electric powertrain. It is intended to succeed the ID.4 and ID.5 models, which have been available since 2021. However, the new Tiguan aims for a more upscale market with its enhanced design and features.

Existing combustion engine versions of the Tiguan will continue to be sold alongside the electric variant, rather than being replaced. While official pricing has not yet been announced, the electric Tiguan is expected to start below £38,000 in the UK.

The exterior design has been significantly altered, adopting Volkswagen's new 'Pure Positive' design language. This results in a more robust SUV stance with precise lines and sculpted surfaces, intended to give the vehicle a more premium appearance, akin to vehicles from a higher market segment. A notable design change includes the return to traditional pull-style door handles, addressing safety concerns associated with flush, pop-out handles common on many new electric vehicles. The front of the vehicle features a full-width LED light strip with an illuminated VW badge, a design element mirrored at the rear.

Inside, the cabin prioritizes user feedback with the integration of physical buttons and advanced technology. The cockpit now includes a 12-inch co-driver display, a 10-inch driver display, and a central 15-inch infotainment touchscreen. Drivers can select retro-style blue-and-red instrument dials, reminiscent of the Golf IV, via the steering wheel menu. Volkswagen aims to create a premium atmosphere within the interior through high-quality design and intuitive controls. Optional features contributing to this feel include electrically adjustable front seats with massage, memory, and ventilation functions, a Harman Kardon sound system, and a panoramic sunroof.

The electric Tiguan offers 534 liters of boot space, slightly less than its predecessor, the ID.4. It also includes a front trunk (frunk) suitable for storing charging cables. The vehicle will be available in three performance configurations: a rear-wheel drive version with 180 bhp and a 58 kWh battery; a rear-wheel drive version with 282 bhp and a 77 kWh battery; and a 295 bhp all-wheel drive variant with a 77 kWh pack.

In the UK, the electric Tiguan will be offered in three trim levels: Trend, Style, and R-Line. Pre-sales are set to commence on October 13 in Germany and other European countries, with prices starting from €42,695 (approximately £36,200). The Volkswagen Tiguan, a best-selling family SUV, is going electric for 2027 and will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs
