Volkswagen T-Roc Second Generation Builds on Success with Upgrades

Volkswagen's second-generation T-Roc compact SUV crossover has arrived, aiming to build on the success of its predecessor. The updated model offers a refined driving experience, increased practicality, and updated technology.

The new T-Roc has grown compared to the original model launched nearly a decade ago, providing more interior space and undergoing revisions both inside and out. It has already earned accolades, including "Best Small SUV" and "Best Car for Caravans up to 1,300kg" from What Car? magazine.

A notable interior feature is the return of physical buttons for commonly used functions such as climate control, a move welcomed for its ease of use. The vehicle also offers customizable interior lighting and music settings through modes like 'Joy', 'Energetic', 'Minimal', and 'Lounge'.

The T-Roc is built on a flexible chassis and incorporates features often found in larger vehicles. Optional driver assistance systems include Travel Assist and Park Assist Pro, available on Style and R-Line trims. The Park Assist Pro allows the T-Roc to maneuver into and out of parking spaces autonomously over distances of up to 50 meters, with remote parking control available via a smartphone.

The initial European models are powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre eTSI mild-hybrid petrol engine, with power outputs of either 116hp or 150hp. Both are front-wheel-drive models paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox. The 116hp version accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 10.6 seconds with a top speed of 122mph, while the 150hp version achieves 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 132mph. Emissions for the two variants range from 127-130g/km.

Three trim levels are offered: Life, Style, and R-Line. The R-Line specification includes electronic stability control, heated sports comfort seats, adaptive cruise control, and sports suspension. The mild-hybrid system utilizes a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and an integrated alternator/electric motor to assist with torque when pulling away.

The first-generation T-Roc, launched in 2017, achieved significant market success with over two million sales globally, making it Volkswagen's second best-selling model after the Tiguan. In the UK last year, Volkswagen registered 178,607 vehicles, with the T-Roc accounting for 28,075 of those sales.

Boot space is rated at 475 liters with the rear seats in place, expandable to 1350 liters when folded. The vehicle maintains maneuverability with a 11.1-meter turning circle and can tow a maximum trailer weight of 1,500kg. Pricing for the model range starts at £31,635.

Two all-new full-hybrid versions are scheduled to be released at a later date. The latest version of Volkswagen's Travel Assist system supports automatic lane changes and adapts to changing speed limits, also anticipating upcoming road features like corners and junctions.
