Volkswagen Announces Major Overhaul Amidst Sales Slump

Volkswagen reported a significant drop in second-quarter sales, with group sales falling 8.6% to just under 2.1 million vehicles. Sales in China alone plummeted by more than one-third, a key factor in the overall decline.

In response to what CEO Oliver Blume described as an "increasingly demanding environment," the Wolfsburg, Germany-based company announced a plan to reduce its model lineup by up to half as part of a fundamental realignment over the next three years. The strategy aims to make Volkswagen faster and more competitive by reducing complexity, focusing on key technologies, improving regional market alignment, and cutting overcapacities.

Deliveries for the core Volkswagen brand saw a 14% decrease in the second quarter compared to the previous year, with just over 1 million vehicles sold. Audi experienced an 8% decline in deliveries, while Porsche saw an 18% drop. However, brands including Lamborghini, Skoda, and the trucks division reported upticks in sales, and growth was noted in the Americas and Europe.

Volkswagen cited several contributing factors for the downturn, including geopolitical tensions, rising costs exacerbated by tariffs, increasing regulatory requirements, and intensifying competition. The company had previously shown optimism about the Chinese market, but has faced stiff competition there, particularly from electric vehicles, which are gaining market share.

In the Zwickau, Germany, employees protested plans to close a local plant, which has transitioned to producing electric cars, demanding job protections. Separately, research firm BernsteinSG expressed skepticism regarding Volkswagen's claims of extending technological leadership, given the rapid pace of innovation among Chinese competitors.
