Virgin Media O2 Plans to Cut Up to 4,000 Jobs Amid Debt Crisis

Virgin Media O2 is reportedly planning to eliminate as many as 4,000 jobs, representing approximately 25% of its 16,000 employees, as it seeks to cut costs in response to mounting debt totaling £22 billion.

Sky News reported that the majority of the potential layoffs would affect non-customer-facing roles. Changes to several senior leadership positions have reportedly already begun.

The company is also said to be reviewing its contractors and suppliers as part of its cost-saving measures. These redundancies are anticipated in the coming months as Virgin Media O2, a joint venture between Liberty Global and Telefonica, finalizes its plans.

An announcement regarding a cost-cutting target is expected with the company's third-quarter results, which are scheduled for release next Tuesday. The focus will be on financial decisions rather than specific headcount numbers, according to a source cited by Sky News.

Trade union officials from the CWU and Prospect have been informed of the proposed plans. The company's bond prices recently fell to record lows earlier this month.

This financial pressure comes after the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) raised concerns that a proposed joint venture with Nexfibre Networks to acquire Netomnia Ltd could potentially reduce competition in the UK broadband market. If approved, the deal could provide Virgin Media O2 with £1 billion in cash to help manage its debt. The CMA is expected to issue its final ruling on this deal by December 15th.

Virgin Media O2 has been approached for comment.
