Vintage Mars Bar Sparks 'Shrinkflation' Debate Online

A Mars Bar discovered from 1991 has ignited a discussion online about product downsizing, commonly known as "shrinkflation." The chocolate bar, which had a best-before date of 1991, was found during a house clearance in Scunthorpe.

Victoria Gordon, who operates a cleaning service, shared a photograph on social media comparing the vintage Mars Bar to a contemporary version. The older bar, weighing 62.5g, appeared substantially larger than the current 40g Mars Bar. Gordon noted its size, stating, "It was nearly as big as my hand, which was kind of why I noticed it."

The discovery and subsequent online sharing highlighted a perceived trend of products shrinking in size over time while prices may remain similar or increase. This phenomenon has been a recurring point of consumer discussion across various industries.

The comparison image of the two Mars Bars quickly gained traction, with many commenters expressing surprise at the size difference and sharing similar observations about other products they have encountered. The find serves as a tangible example for consumers discussing the erosion of product volume over the decades.
