US Mortgage Rates Hit Lowest Point in Seven Weeks

The average interest rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage in the United States has fallen to 6.43%, marking its lowest level since mid-May. This decrease from last week's 6.49% offers a potential easing of borrowing costs for prospective homebuyers.

For comparison, the average rate stood at 6.67% one year ago. This week's rate is the lowest recorded since May 14, when it was 6.36%.

Rates for 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, frequently chosen by those refinancing existing loans, also saw a decline. The average rate dropped to 5.79% from 5.84% last week. A year ago, this rate was 5.8%, according to Freddie Mac.

Mortgage rates are influenced by various economic factors, including the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decisions and investor expectations regarding the economy and inflation. These rates generally track the yield on 10-year Treasury notes, which lenders use as a benchmark for pricing home loans.
