United Utilities Faces Major Shareholder Backlash Over Executive Pay
Nearly a quarter of investors opposed the water firm's boardroom pay policy, highlighting significant investor discontent.
United Utilities experienced one of the year's most significant shareholder revolts, with almost 24 percent of investors voting against the company's executive pay policy at its annual general meeting.
The water company, which serves approximately seven million households in northwest England, had proposed an annual allowance of £435,000 for its chief executive, Louise Beardmore. This move followed a ban on bonuses imposed by the industry regulator, Ofwat.
Despite the high level of opposition, the vote was not sufficient to block the proposed pay package. However, the outcome represents a considerable setback for United Utilities' management, signaling deep investor dissatisfaction with boardroom compensation practices in the face of regulatory constraints.
