United Airlines to Replace Middle Seats with Enhanced Space on New Airbus Jets

United Airlines is introducing a new seating configuration on its forthcoming Airbus A321XLR jets, removing the traditional middle seat in select rows to offer enhanced personal space and a shared table. This new Economy Plus option is slated to go on sale later this year, with flights featuring the updated cabin design scheduled to depart shortly thereafter.

Every one of the airline's 50 incoming Airbus A321XLR aircraft will be outfitted with a dedicated Economy Plus row where the middle seats have been eliminated. In their place, a permanently installed table will stretch from armrest to armrest. Passengers occupying the window and aisle seats in these rows will share this table, which features a soft leather-like covering and two cup indentations, while also benefiting from additional elbow room on longer journeys. This added space is in addition to the three inches of legroom already standard with Economy Plus seating on the A321XLR.

Andrew Nocella, United's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, stated that the airline is investing across its fleet to provide customers with choice and value in every cabin. The airline expects to be the only U.S. carrier to offer this specific seating configuration. The A321XLR is designed as United's most premium narrowbody aircraft, intended for short- and medium-haul international routes. These jets will also feature 32 premium seats, an increase from the Boeing 757 aircraft they are replacing, including United Polaris Studio suites with privacy doors and all-aisle access. Passengers will have access to 4K OLED entertainment screens with Bluetooth connectivity, with screen sizes varying by cabin class, from 19 inches in Polaris to 13 inches in United Economy. Additionally, the aircraft will include larger overhead bins and a snack bar at the rear of the economy cabin.

United plans to deploy the A321XLR on domestic routes starting this fall, with international service commencing by early 2027. The airline has not yet disclosed the pricing for the new Economy Plus option, but further details are expected before bookings open.

The announcement has generated discussion online, with some social media users questioning the motivations behind the redesign, suggesting it could be an economic measure rather than solely passenger comfort-focused. Others have drawn comparisons to European business class layouts and noted a potential response to growing passenger demand for more personal space in economy cabins.

This seating update follows United's recent unveiling of its United Relax RowSM concept, which is set to allow multiple economy seats on Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 widebody aircraft to convert into a lie-flat couch beginning in early 2027.
