Unilever Shares Surge on Strongest Sales Growth in 16 Years

Unilever shares experienced a significant rise Tuesday, reaching their highest growth in 16 years, driven by robust sales in its beauty and personal care segments. The company also increased its annual outlook, citing strong performance in India and Latin America.

Chief Executive Fernando Fernandez stated that the company's strategic focus on beauty and personal care is yielding positive results. Second-quarter sales volumes increased by 5.5%, the largest rise since 2010, contributing to a total sales increase of 5.8% to £11.11 billion. This performance buoyed the FTSE 100 index, with Unilever shares climbing 6.18% on Tuesday morning.

Advertising associated with the World Cup played a notable role, particularly for brands like Dove, Rexona, and Lynx deodorants and soaps, which saw a 'strong performance.' Fernandez described the World Cup as a 'pivotal moment' for Unilever, which engaged 50,000 social media content creators to amplify its sponsorships.

Power brands such as Dove, Sunsilk, and Vaseline experienced double-digit growth. Unilever anticipates these brands will continue to benefit from their tournament association in the coming months. Fernandez highlighted that these results demonstrate the company's capacity to perform while undergoing portfolio transformation, stating, 'Our brands are stronger, our execution is sharper and we are driving desire at scale.'

The company has revised its annual sales growth forecast upwards to between 4% and 6%, from a previous expectation towards the lower end of that range. Volume growth is now predicted at 3%, an increase from the earlier forecast of 2%.

Despite broader economic pressures, including uncertain consumer confidence and supply chain challenges related to certain chemical ingredients for its homecare business, Unilever is navigating these conditions. The company has been concentrating on its well-established household brands while divesting from segments like the healthy snack brand Graze and some international operations.

However, sales in Europe saw a 1.3% decline, with volume sales down 0.2%, a situation Fernandez attributed to 'really soft' sentiment in the region. He acknowledged that the UK is a key European market where Unilever will continue to invest.

Unilever expects its deal to combine products, including Marmite and Hellmann's, with US spice giant McCormick to be completed by mid-2027. This transaction has drawn scrutiny, with veteran fund manager Terry Smith, who previously held a stake in Unilever, accusing the company of misleading him regarding its restructuring plans. Nelson Peltz, a Unilever board member since 2022, is reported to have been a strong proponent of the McCormick deal.
