UK Premium Bond Holders Can Still Win Prizes Years Later Through Reallocation

It is possible for UK Premium Bond holders to receive prizes years after the draw date, National Savings and Investments (NS&I) has confirmed. This occurs when original prize winners become ineligible, leading to the prize being reallocated to another bondholder.

Phil Maciver, a 70-year-old ex-coastguard from Aberdeenshire, received a £50 Premium Bond prize in April 2021, weeks after the typical announcement date. He had held Premium Bonds for 50 years with the maximum £50,000 invested. Maciver stated he actively checks his winnings each month, describing it as "a bit of fun" and "exciting." The late arrival of the prize prompted him to investigate, leading him to discover the concept of reallocated prizes.

Premium Bonds operate differently from traditional savings accounts. Instead of earning interest, bondholders enter a monthly prize draw for amounts ranging from £25 to £1 million. The winning numbers are generated by a random number generator known as Ernie, with each £1 Bond having a chance of winning. Prizes are usually announced at the beginning of the month and paid into accounts by the seventh.

Maciver found an explanation for the unexpected prize through a Facebook post, where he inquired about the £50 deposited into his bank account by NS&I. He explained to the Daily Mail that many bondholders might overlook such prizes, especially if the amount is small, as they may not closely track their monthly winnings. "I’m sure about 99 per cent of the people who hold Premium Bonds don’t realise if they’ve received a reallocated prize - unless a substantial amount of money comes in," he said. "Otherwise if it's just dribbles, no one really checks."

Approximately 22.7 million people in the UK hold Premium Bonds, making it a popular savings product. However, the process of reallocated prizes is not widely understood.

Reasons for Ineligibility

An original winner can become ineligible to receive a prize if they have passed away and NS&I has not been informed, or if their bond holding exceeds the £50,000 limit. This limit can be breached if two accounts are merged, for instance, if bonds were purchased for children by various relatives and then consolidated into a single adult account. In such cases, the initial prize is cancelled, and additional numbers are drawn to reallocate the prize.

NS&I stated that when an original prize is cancelled, it is unlikely to have been cashed. However, if it has been cashed, NS&I would initiate a payment recall, requesting the customer's bank to seek permission from the recipient to return the funds. A new bond number is then selected to receive the prize.

Eligibility for Former Bondholders

Individuals who have previously cashed in their Premium Bonds may still be eligible for a reallocated prize if their original bonds were next in line at the time of the draw. NS&I uses the most recent contact details on file from when the bonds were cashed to notify the new winner. Current bondholders might also win a reallocated prize associated with bonds they previously held but have since cashed in.

An NS&I spokesman noted that around 350 prizes each month are found to be ineligible for various reasons. "This means we can pass prizes on to the next person in line creating unexpected excitement," the spokesman said. "We send out letters explaining the unexpected win."
