UK Petrol Prices Surge to Highest Levels Since Iran Conflict

Petrol prices in the United Kingdom are expected to reach 160 pence per litre this week, marking the highest point since the commencement of the conflict involving the U.S. and Iran. This projected increase follows a weekend rise, with petrol averaging 157.81 pence per litre and diesel reaching 175.71 pence per litre, according to the RAC.

The surge in pump prices is directly linked to escalated tensions between the United States and Iran, which have resulted in nearly two weeks of U.S. airstrikes and retaliatory attacks. This has led to a significant rise in global oil prices.

Impact on Drivers

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, stated that petrol prices have already increased by over 6.5 pence per litre and diesel by 9 pence since the beginning of July. This translates to an additional £3.50 for filling a family car with petrol and £5 for diesel. Williams warned that petrol is "highly likely" to hit 160 pence per litre, and diesel could reach 180 pence by the end of the week, driven by elevated oil prices. The outlook for drivers was described as "pretty grim."

The price drivers pay at the pump is significantly influenced by the global oil price, which has climbed since the ceasefire between the involved nations ended. On July 23, Brent oil reached $102 per barrel before dropping to $92 by July 27, but this remained approximately 30 percent higher than on July 1.

Diesel prices are experiencing a faster rise than petrol due to the UK's heavy reliance on diesel imports and increased demand for U.S. diesel. Historically, diesel hit highs of 191.54 pence per litre on April 15, and petrol reached 159.53 pence per litre on May 28 amid the ongoing Middle East conflict. Conversely, the lowest prices for petrol this year were recorded on July 6 at 150.59 pence per litre, and for diesel on July 9 at 164.52 pence per litre.

Petrol rose 0.6p over the weekend to an average of 157.81p and diesel rose 1p to 175.71p, the RAC reports, with petrol set to push 160p this week

Financial Impact

These fluctuating fuel prices have already cost UK drivers hundreds of millions of pounds. The RAC Foundation calculated that drivers paid an additional £307 million between February 28 and March 24, coinciding with the start of the conflict.

The RAC advises that a brief pause in hostilities between the U.S. and Iran is unlikely to stabilize oil prices. For elevated prices at the pump to recede, a sustained drop in oil prices over several weeks is necessary. Without this, the current high fuel costs are expected to persist.
