UK Kebab Supplier Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged Mislabeling of Meat
Kismet Kebabs, a major supplier, is under review following accusations of selling goat meat as lamb.
Kismet Kebabs, a significant supplier of kebab meat in the United Kingdom, is facing scrutiny after allegations surfaced that it may have supplied millions of "lamb" kebabs that were, in fact, made with goat, skin, and fat. The company has stated that its current operations are vastly different from those of five years ago when the alleged practices occurred.
In 2024, Kismet Kebabs received accreditation from BRCGS (Brand Reputation through Compliance Global Standards), a food safety standard recognized internationally. Upon learning of the court proceedings against the company, BRCGS initiated a review of Kismet Kebabs' accreditation. The firm was subsequently found to remain compliant with the standards.
A spokesperson for Kismet Kebabs Ltd emphasized that the business has undergone significant changes. "It is important to recognize that the matters in question relate to historical events and do not reflect the standards, systems, management structure, or operational controls that exist within the business today," the spokesperson stated. This situation draws parallels to the horsemeat scandal involving lasagne in the past.
The company is one of the UK's largest suppliers of kebab meat. Images show large containers of pink paste intended for kebab production and finished donor kebabs wrapped in cling film. The company's external sign has also been pictured.
