UK Investors Pocket Record Dividends as Banks and Miners Surge

Investors in the United Kingdom received a record £35.3 billion in dividend payouts from companies between April and June, according to recent figures. This represents a 2.5% increase in total payouts, including special dividends, compared to the same period last year. Regular dividend payments saw a more significant rise of 7.4%.

The surge in payouts was largely fueled by exceptional growth in specific sectors, particularly banking and mining, as tracked by shares registry Computershare. Banks alone distributed a record £11.1 billion, marking a 20.6% increase year-over-year. This performance is attributed to the impact of high interest rates and minimal loan losses, which bolstered bank profitability.

Mining companies also significantly contributed to the record dividends, driven by elevated prices for commodities such as copper, silver, and gold. This sector experienced a 27.5% increase in dividends during the second quarter of 2026.

Despite these strong performances, some sectors faced challenges due to the struggling UK economy. Housebuilders were among those negatively impacted. Payouts from the food, drink, and tobacco sectors decreased by 15.9%, a decline notably influenced by a substantial reduction in dividends by Diageo.

Computershare's Mark Cleland noted that dividend growth remains highly concentrated, with a few large companies and sectors being the primary drivers. He anticipates a tempering of growth in the near future as these dominant sectors show signs of slower gains. For the full year, Computershare expects total dividend payouts to reach approximately £90.5 billion.
