A temporary reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) on tickets for certain attractions and on children's meals is set to take effect, a move welcomed by businesses as a "wonderful initiative" to boost accessibility for families over the summer holidays.

The government's plan, effective from Thursday, will see VAT rates lowered on specific services, with the expectation that businesses will pass the savings on to consumers. This measure is intended to provide financial relief to families who may be experiencing strain during the summer break.

James Robson, general manager of Birdworld in Farnham, Surrey, expressed hope that the initiative would make visits more feasible for families with tighter budgets. "This opens up accessibility to people who might be feeling the strain over the summer holidays," Robson stated. He added that while the tax relief for the summer is appreciated, attractions are facing increasing operational costs and would benefit from more sustained support.

The VAT cut will apply to children's meals and tickets for select attractions across the UK, including those in Surrey. Businesses like Birdworld are anticipating that this reduction will encourage more visitors, particularly those who might otherwise find the cost prohibitive. However, the call from operators like Robson is for a more permanent strategy to address the rising expenses associated with running leisure attractions and to ensure their long-term viability.
