UK Business Confidence Plummets to Four-Year Low Amid Political Uncertainty
Accountancy group ICAEW reports lowest confidence levels since late 2022, citing a change in prime minister and ongoing global conflicts.
UK business confidence has fallen to its lowest point in four years, with the latest report from the accountancy group ICAEW indicating a significant drop amid what is described as ‘a summer of domestic uncertainty.’ The ICAEW's business confidence monitor registered minus-14.6 in the second quarter, a level not seen since late 2022.
This marks the sixth consecutive quarter that the index has remained in negative territory, matching the longest streak recorded since the 2008 financial crisis. The prolonged period of low confidence suggests persistent challenges for businesses operating within the UK economy.
ICAEW chief executive Alan Vallance highlighted that the war in Iran has notably impacted confidence, with its economic repercussions proving difficult to overcome. He emphasized the need for the incoming prime minister to prioritize the creation of an environment conducive to business growth and prosperity, particularly with the looming domestic uncertainty.
