UK Banks See Surge in Current Account Switches as Customers Chase Cash Bonuses

The number of individuals switching their current accounts in the United Kingdom surged by 38.5% in the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to data from the Current Account Switching Service (CASS).

The period between January and June saw a significant uptick in account migrations, with June being the busiest month for switches, recording 116,345. April followed with 89,908 switches, and May saw 82,746.

A primary driver for this increased activity is the offer of cash bonuses, often described as 'free money,' from major banks competing for new customers. These incentives can range from £100 to over £200 for customers who meet specific switching criteria.

Nationwide emerged as a significant winner, attracting the largest number of new customers with 58,448 switches into its accounts. This was followed by Lloyds, which gained 24,349 customers, and Monzo, with 21,894.

Nationwide's appeal is likely boosted by a £175 switching bonus, alongside the potential for a future £100 Fairer Share payment. Lloyds has also been active with incentives, having previously offered bonuses of up to £500 for select accounts.

Conversely, Halifax and Barclays experienced the largest net customer losses. Halifax saw a deficit of 21,869 customers, while Barclays lost 20,780. NatWest and Chase also reported net customer outflows.

Barclays and NatWest are currently offering £200 switching bonuses, intensifying competition. Chase UK, however, is not offering a cash incentive at this time.

Halifax is currently undergoing a structural transition, with its accounts and customer base migrating to Lloyds as the 173-year-old brand is phased out.

In total, 288,999 switches were completed across 53 participating banks and building societies in the second quarter of 2026 (April to June).

While many customers switch accounts primarily for the monetary incentives, some banks like Monzo attract customers through app-based features such as instant spending alerts, budgeting tools, and fee-free international card use. Personal finance experts suggest that Monzo's referral incentives may also contribute to its popularity.

Andrew Hagger, a personal finance expert from Moneycomms, noted that switching incentives are a key factor for many consumers looking to boost their bank balances amid cost of living pressures. He advised that switching accounts at least once can be beneficial, and staying with a provider like Nationwide could offer ongoing benefits such as annual Fairer Share payments, although future payments are not guaranteed.

Several banks are currently offering switching bonuses: HSBC (£220), First Direct (£175), Barclays (£200), NatWest (£200), Co-op (£125 upfront plus £25 monthly for three months), Santander (£180), and Nationwide (£175).
