The latest installment in the Spider-Man franchise, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," has shattered box office records, achieving the biggest domestic opening weekend in history and surpassing "Avengers: Endgame." Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film generated $360 million in its first three days following its July 31 release. Alongside its box office triumph, reports indicate that star Tom Holland, 30, could earn between $20 million and $25 million from his combined base salary and box office bonuses for the film.

The film has already reached $1 billion at the global box office within six days of its release, according to Sony Pictures. This makes it the second-fastest film to achieve this financial milestone. "Avengers: Endgame" previously earned $1.2 billion in its opening weekend in April 2019, while "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" recorded $932 million in its worldwide debut.

Holland's salary for the role has seen a significant escalation since his 2016 Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in "Captain America: Civil War," where he reportedly earned around $250,000. His pay increased to $1.5 million for "Spider-Man: Homecoming" in 2017, followed by $4 million for "Far From Home" in 2019, and an estimated $10 million for "No Way Home" in 2021.

In comparison, previous actors who portrayed Spider-Man saw different earning trajectories. Andrew Garfield reportedly received $500,000 for "The Amazing Spider-Man" in 2012 and between $1 million and $2 million for its 2014 sequel. Tobey Maguire, the first live-action Spider-Man, earned $4 million in 2002, which increased to $17.5 million for the 2004 sequel "Spider-Man 2." For "Spider-Man 3" in 2007, Maguire received a $15 million base salary, plus a 7.5 percent share of the film's backend profits.

Tobey Maguire, 51, earned $4 million as the first-ever live-action Spider-Man in 2002. That number increased to $17.5 million for 2004's sequel, Spider-Man 2. And Spider-Man 3, which hit theaters in 2007, landed Maguire a $15 million base salary, plus 7.5 percent on the backend; pictured in 2023

The production budget for Holland's latest turn as Peter Parker was $225 million. Despite the high costs, Tom Rothman, Chairperson of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, expressed optimism about the theatrical market, stating, "All the geniuses who said that theatrical movies were dead, they’re not necessarily right. Actually, the theatrical marketplace is booming right now, and I’m excited about it. So I’m very optimistic."

Critics have widely praised "Brand New Day," with many considering it one of the best Spider-Man films and a significant contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's resurgence. One notable change in this iteration is Peter Parker's ability to shoot webs directly from his wrists, a departure from the mechanical web-shooters seen in previous films. This alteration has been described as a "masterstroke" that "restores the showmanship of the Maguire-Sam Raimi years."
