TikTok Shop Sees Surge in UK Sales Fueled by Live Shopping

TikTok Shop has experienced significant growth in the UK, with sales increasing by more than 30% year-on-year in June. Live shopping has been identified as the fastest-growing format on the platform, now hosting over 6,000 livestreams daily.

At a recent event in Covent Garden, the platform showcased 20 small businesses that utilized live selling to reach customers across the United Kingdom. Manny Malik, a halal butcher from Wolverhampton, demonstrated the effectiveness of live shopping, attracting around 200 viewers to his smartphone-based sales session. Malik reported selling £8,000 worth of meat in a three-hour live stream, a volume that would typically take his family shop, Malik Butchers, three to four days to achieve.

This success has contributed to the expansion of Malik Butchers, which is now opening a second store in Stoke. "We didn't have these sales prior to TikTok. We're not losing money, we've got enough profitability in there," Malik stated, acknowledging the platform's role in driving his business growth.

However, the platform does involve fees. TikTok Shop UK retains up to 9 pence from every £1 sold as a standard commission. This commission rate is comparable to eBay's marketplace fees, which range from 6.9p to 14.9p per pound depending on the product category. For businesses using eBay's live selling format, the combined fee, including payment processing, is up to 8.42p per pound.

Manny Malik commented on the fees, noting, "It's a lot." He added, "For us in the meat game, there aren't huge margins. However, it's opened up a new platform."

The trend of purchasing goods through social media live streams is becoming increasingly common for consumers.
