The Rise of the $10 Smoothie: Luxury Wellness Accessory
Once a simple blend of fruit, smoothies have evolved into status symbols, infused with collagen and hyaluronic acid, commanding premium prices and mimicking luxury skincare.
Smoothies, once a basic blend of fruits and vegetables, have transformed into a coveted summer accessory, with prices soaring to nearly $10 for trendy concoctions. These drinks, popularized by luxury Los Angeles supermarket Erewhon and chains like London-based Elevate and Soho House, are now infused with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and marine collagen, mirroring the ingredient lists of high-end skincare.
The trend sees consumers queuing for vibrant, photogenic drinks that offer not just refreshment but also aspirational wellness. Elevate founder Julia Baldet described the concept as a response to a lack of healthy yet appealing grab-and-go options in London, where options were either "clinical wellness brands or grab-and-go food with little nutritional value." The focus, she added, is on taste, as consumers won't repeatedly purchase functional drinks if they don't genuinely enjoy them.
These high-priced smoothies are seen as an accessible form of luxury consumption, offering perceived benefits like improved skin and increased energy at a lower cost than, for example, a high-end facial. Registered nutritionist Kristen Stavridis noted that the post-pandemic wellness culture has seen a shift towards health-focused behaviors, with social media platforms increasingly featuring healthy routines over past trends.
However, Stavridis expressed caution regarding the "health halo" surrounding many of these products. While some ingredients like protein, fiber, and those supporting energy have nutritional merit, the scientific evidence behind claims like "gut health" or "skin glow" is often limited, particularly for a single drink. She also pointed out that many smoothies, typically containing 200 to 450 calories, are too low in energy to serve as complete meal replacements, functioning better as snacks.
Despite these reservations, the allure of smoothies with names like "The Glow" persists, offering an achievable indulgence in an era where other luxuries, like property ownership, feel out of reach. The phenomenon highlights wellness as a growing luxury market, where a $10 smoothie can serve as a status symbol, suggesting to onlookers that its consumer is living a healthy, aspirational lifestyle.
