The Open Championship Drives Significant Economic Boost to Merseyside Region

The 154th Open Championship held at Royal Birkdale in Southport is projected to deliver a substantial economic uplift to Merseyside businesses, with an anticipated 100% increase in local spending. Analysis from Mastercard indicates that pubs, restaurants, and hotels in the region are set to be the primary beneficiaries of the influx of more than 300,000 attendees.

This economic impact follows trends seen at previous Open Championship events. In 2023, the tournament at Portrush generated £89.2 million for the Northern Ireland economy. The year prior, when Royal Troon hosted, the Scottish economy saw an estimated £87.3 million boost. Spending within a 5km radius of Portrush during last year's event was approximately 119% higher than a typical day, with local bars and restaurants experiencing spending spikes of 234% and 95% respectively.

Natalia Lechmanova, Chief Economist Europe at Mastercard Economics Institute, highlighted the consistent economic benefits major sporting events bring to host communities. She noted that Liverpool's existing tourism and hospitality infrastructure is expected to amplify the economic reach of the Championship beyond the golf course itself. Lechmanova also pointed to the increasing significance of the 'experience economy,' where consumers increasingly prioritize spending on live, memorable events.

Merseyside businesses are forecasted to report a 100 per cent increase in spending while the Open was in town

The event attracted a global audience, with fans traveling from Australia and the United States, in addition to domestic visitors, to witness top golfers such as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler compete. While the on-course competition concluded, the economic ripple effects are expected to provide a sustained boost for local businesses throughout Merseyside.
