Supermarkets Selling Dried Parsley at Higher Price Per Kilo Than Caviar and Truffles
An investigation found that basic pantry staples are being priced significantly higher than luxury food items.
Shoppers are encountering unexpectedly high prices for common grocery items, with dried parsley costing more per kilogram than luxury goods such as caviar and truffles, according to an investigation by The Mail on Sunday. Basic products that are inexpensive to produce are being sold at markups that exceed those of high-end foods.
Dried herbs, fruit teas, and children's snacks were found to be priced at substantially more per gram than luxury items. Consumer expert Martyn James suggested that manufacturers leverage their financial influence to secure prominent supermarket displays. He noted that consumers, often focused on completing their shopping quickly, may purchase these items without fully considering the value for money.
The investigation analyzed the cost per kilogram of popular products in Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket chain, comparing them with the equivalent weight of luxury goods. A 3-gram jar of Schwartz dried flat parsley was priced at £2, equating to over £666 per kilogram. This is more than five times the cost of Lemberg's Pink Salmon Caviar, which sells for £129 per kilogram, despite dried parsley being available from UK wholesalers for approximately £7 per kilogram.
Kiddylicious Apple & Broccoli Munchy Sticks were priced at £109.38 per kilogram, with rice and corn flour forming nearly 80 percent of their ingredients. In comparison, Lindt's Lindor Extra Dark Chocolate truffles, containing 70 percent cacao, cost £37.50 per kilogram. Pukka's Organic Night Time Chamomile & Lavender tea, primarily composed of chamomile flowers, was priced at £237.50 per kilogram for its 20-bag packs. This is considerably more than fresh summer truffles from premium dealer Laumont, which cost £158 per kilogram.
A Tesco spokesperson stated the company's commitment to maintaining affordable grocery prices for its customers. The brands involved in the pricing of other products did not respond to requests for comment.
