Subway's New 'SubDog' Sparks Online Debate Over Appearance and Price
The fast-food chain's limited-time hot dog offering has gone viral, drawing criticism for its color and perceived value.
Subway's latest limited-time menu item, the "SubDog," has become a subject of online discussion, not for settling the age-old debate about whether a hot dog is a sandwich, but for its appearance and price.
The SubDog, which features a nearly half-pound all-beef hot dog served on Subway's signature bread with customizable toppings, launched recently in participating Canadian locations.
Despite Subway's intention to offer a fresh take on a summertime staple and to suggest that a hot dog "can do more when it thinks like a sandwich," many social media users have fixated on the frankfurter's grayish hue. Comments on platforms like X and Reddit have described the color as unappetizing and dark, with some users expressing strong negative reactions to the overall look of the product.
Beyond its color, the ingredients of the SubDog have also drawn attention. The processed meat contains beef, water, corn syrup solids, modified corn starch, salt, dextrose, sodium erythorbate, garlic powder, spice extractives, sodium nitrite, and smoke. While these ingredients are not unusual for processed meats, they have contributed to the online conversation.
The price of the SubDog has also been a point of contention. Many customers described the roughly $13.00 cost as excessive for what they perceived as essentially a hot dog on a sub bun. One user on Reddit who claimed to have tried the item stated that the quality of the hot dog itself was poor and that the novelty wore off quickly, calling the sandwich "awful."
Subway has stated that the SubDog is designed to put a fresh spin on a summertime staple and is available for a limited time. As part of a promotion, customers purchasing a SubDog through August 31 will receive a PIN for a chance to win prizes, including a trip to a Toronto Blue Jays game.
While some consumers associate hot dogs with a bright pink color, the appearance can vary based on meat type, curing processes, and preparation methods. All-beef franks, for instance, may appear grayer than those with more curing agents. However, this explanation has not significantly quelled the online criticism.
The SubDog is available at participating Subway locations across Canada until August 31.
