Subaru Recalls Over 541,000 SUVs for Incorrect Weight Label
The recall affects Crosstrek, Forester, and Ascent models due to a label that may lead to an overloaded vehicle.
Subaru of America is initiating a recall for more than 541,000 Crosstrek, Forester, and Ascent sport utility vehicles in the United States. The recall stems from an inaccurate certification label affixed to the vehicles, which incorrectly states their gross axle weight rating (GAWR). The GAWR indicates the maximum weight each axle of a vehicle can support.
According to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a mislabeled GAWR could potentially lead to an overloaded vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash. Subaru has reported no known crashes or injuries in the U.S. associated with this issue.
No mechanical repair is required for the affected vehicles. Instead, Subaru will mail owners a "corrective certification label" to replace the faulty one. Owners also have the option to have a dealership install the new label at no cost.
The recall encompasses specific model years: 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid, 2025-2026 Forester and Forester Hybrid, and 2019-2026 Ascent vehicles.
Owners are expected to receive notification letters by late August. Additional correspondence will be sent once the remedy, the corrective label, is available. The NHTSA and Subaru provide online platforms where drivers can verify if their vehicle is part of the recall and find further information.
