Student Turns Closet Clutter into Lucrative Business, Earning Thousands Monthly on Vinted

Hattie Cooke, a 20-year-old fashion student, has found a way to combat student finances by building a thriving business on the resale platform Vinted. What began as a casual way to declutter has evolved into a significant income source, with Cooke reporting earnings of up to £4,500 per month.

Cooke, who is studying at the London College of Fashion, discovered Vinted during her first year in 2024. Initially drawn to the platform to make quick cash from unworn clothing, she soon realized its potential. Her background in fashion and proximity to London's vintage scene provided ample opportunity to source unique items. "Being around fashionable people, I got a lot of inspiration and went mad with buying stuff," she admitted, noting that her spending habits on vintage pieces led her to seek ways to recoup costs.

She found that Vinted allowed her to maintain a "revolving wardrobe," enabling her to adapt her style with the seasons and trends without overspending on new items. This approach also aligns with a more eco-conscious mindset, reducing reliance on fast fashion.

Cooke specializes in a particular aesthetic, primarily selling clothing from the early 2000s, often referred to as 'Y2K' style. She frequently resells items for more than double her purchase price. For example, a recent acquisition of 50 vintage denim skirts for £50 resulted in immediate potential profit if each skirt sold for more than a pound. To date, her Vinted sales have generated nearly £10,000.

Cooke has shared several strategies that have contributed to her success:

Photography Matters

Cooke emphasizes the importance of presentation, noting that items photographed against a visually appealing background, such as her leopard print bedding, tend to perform better than those on a plain floor. She believes this complements the aesthetic of the clothes she sells.

Strategic Listing Times

Timing is crucial, according to Cooke. She recommends listing items in the early evening, between 6 or 7 p.m., when people are typically finishing work, as sales often occur that same evening. Sundays are also identified as a favorable day for uploading new items.

Optimized Descriptions

Using relevant hashtags and keywords that capture the item's style, such as 'Y2K' or '2000s,' helps boost visibility within the platform's algorithm. She also suggests including celebrity names if an item aligns with their style.

Consistent Uploads

Cooke credits consistent uploading for consistent sales. She experienced slower periods early on when her listing frequency was inconsistent, highlighting regularity as a key factor.

Detailed Measurements

Including precise measurements, such as waist and bust, significantly speeds up sales and reduces the need for her to answer individual buyer inquiries.

Hattie says that including measurements in the Vinted description helps to sell items quickly

Smart Pricing

Her advice on pricing is to list items slightly higher than the desired selling price. This allows room to accept offers, creating a perception of a bargain for the buyer.

Prompt Shipping

Fast shipping, ideally on the same day or the day after a sale, encourages repeat business. Cooke believes that prompt dispatch reassures buyers of her reliability.

Cooke’s venture demonstrates how a keen eye for fashion trends, strategic online selling practices, and a commitment to customer service can turn a personal passion into a substantial financial endeavor. "It’s crazy how much money you can make from home," she remarked.
