Stax Founders Apologize for Unsent Orders Amid Brand Collapse
Don Robertson and Matilda Murray address customers after their activewear brand, Stax, was placed into liquidation.
Don Robertson and Matilda Murray, the founders of the Australian activewear brand Stax, have issued their first public statement since the company was put into liquidation, apologizing for unsent orders and the lack of earlier communication.
The multimillion-dollar brand, founded in Perth in 2015, experienced a rapid rise, reaching a peak valuation of approximately $52 million and landing Robertson and Murray on the 2022 Young Rich List. However, the company has recently gone into liquidation, with liquidators Brian Raymond Silvia and Michael Charles Hird appointed.
"I want you to know that we have heard you," the statement, posted on Instagram, began. "First and foremost, we're truly sorry for this and for not communicating earlier. Stax was built over more than a decade with an incredible community and knowing that so many of our customers have been impacted is something we carry every day."
The founders acknowledged the frustration and disappointment of customers who have not yet received their orders. "If you placed an order and haven't received it, we completely understand why you're upset," the statement read.
Regarding recourse for affected customers, the statement advised that control of the company and its assets has transferred to the receivers following their appointment. "Decisions regarding outstanding orders and the administration of the business are now being managed through that process," it stated. Customers who paid via credit card, debit card, or PayPal were encouraged to contact their payment provider to inquire about available options, such as buyer protection or chargeback processes.
The founders concluded their statement by thanking those who had shown kindness during what they described as a difficult period. "Thank you as well to those who have shown us kindness during what has been the most difficult chapter of our lives."
Stax, which once operated eight stores, was forced to close six of them in 2025 due to rising interest rates. At the time of receivership, the company maintained two boutique locations in Sydney and Liverpool, alongside its online store.
FTI Consulting receiver Joseph Hansell noted that Stax is a well-known brand with strong customer support. "Stax has done something genuinely impressive, proving that premium activewear does not have to choose between performance and style," Hansell said. The business is currently trading as usual while the receivers conduct an assessment of its operations.
The brand originated in a Perth bedroom in 2015, with Robertson and Murray packing orders for months before relocating operations. The duo moved to Sydney in 2019 to further expand the brand. Stax garnered international attention and support, with celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Lizzo, Megan Fox, Rita Ora, Hailey Bieber, and Addison Rae having worn the brand's activewear.
