Starbucks to Close 64 California Locations

Starbucks is preparing to close 64 coffee shops across California, with locations slated for closure spanning from the Bay Area and Sacramento to Los Angeles and San Diego.

The closures, which have reportedly begun with signage appearing in affected stores this weekend, are part of a larger national strategy by the company. Starbucks plans to close approximately 250 underperforming stores across the U.S. and Canada, a move that represents about 1% of its North American footprint.

News outlets have cross-checked a sampling of the California locations using the Starbucks app and the company’s store locator to identify stores without operating hours scheduled beyond the current week. The list of 64 California locations was compiled by a Starbucks data tracker named Winter, who has been documenting company-operated stores for decades.

Starbucks has not individually confirmed each of the 64 reported California store closures. The company stated that affected locations will have signage notifying customers of the closures. It is unclear if any employees will be laid off, as Starbucks plans to transfer workers to nearby stores.

These closures are part of Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol’s “Back to Starbucks” strategy, initiated in 2024. In a letter to employees, Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams indicated that the company identified locations where it could not consistently deliver the desired customer and partner experience or where there was no clear path to acceptable financial performance.

In addition to the store closures, Starbucks is incurring a $300 million restructuring charge and initiating a $1 billion effort for restructuring and renovation. The company aims to retrofit and enhance 1,500 existing North American coffeehouses by September 30.
