SpaceX Shares Tumble After Record-Breaking IPO Rally

SpaceX's public market debut saw its stock price decline by as much as 7 percent in volatile trading on Tuesday, marking the first notable downturn since its $1.8 trillion initial public offering (IPO) the previous week. The shares had previously risen by 6 percent earlier in the session before closing nearly 5 percent lower.

This dip followed a period of rapid valuation growth that briefly positioned SpaceX ahead of Amazon and threatened to surpass Microsoft, making it the world's fourth-largest company at one point. On Tuesday, the stock had peaked at a 17 percent gain for the day, leaving it 66 percent above its IPO offer price and nearing a $3 trillion valuation.

This surge significantly increased Elon Musk's personal wealth, reportedly adding hundreds of billions of dollars to reach $1.3 trillion, a figure substantially larger than other tech magnates. According to investment platform AJ Bell, the scale of Musk's wealth accumulation in a single day surpassed the lifetime earnings of investor Warren Buffett.

Some market observers have expressed skepticism about SpaceX's current valuation. Analysts at Morningstar had previously estimated the company's value at $780 billion, less than half its IPO price. One analyst has characterized the stock as "the biggest meme stock in town."

SpaceX's business portfolio includes a global satellite communications network, a significant artificial intelligence (AI) venture, and its core rocket operations. The company reported a $5 billion loss last year. Its substantial valuation is reportedly tied to ambitious future plans, such as launching AI data centers into space and exponentially increasing AI-related revenues.

Despite the recent share price decline, investors who participated in the IPO still hold substantial paper gains. Approximately 4 percent of SpaceX's shares were available for trading immediately after the IPO. The expiration of insider lock-up periods is expected to increase the number of shares available, potentially leading to further selling pressure. UK retail investors, who purchased approximately £270 million worth of shares on the first day of trading, will be closely watching the company's performance.
