SpaceX Shares Rise Amidst Insider Lockup Expiration

Shares in Elon Musk's SpaceX experienced a notable increase on Thursday, even as a significant number of company insiders became eligible to sell their holdings for the first time. This development follows a period of sharp stock depreciation in recent days, driven by anticipation of the lockup expirations.

More than 900 million shares were released from previous trading restrictions, effectively doubling the available supply. This increased availability coincided with a 2.5% rise in SpaceX shares, reaching $110.92 in midday trading. The previous day had seen one of the company's most substantial stock drops since its public debut, with shares plummeting nearly 14%.

Analysts suggest that the expiration of these lockup provisions presents an opportunity for new investors to acquire SpaceX stock at a reduced price. Adam Jonas of Morgan Stanley expressed a bullish outlook, predicting the stock could reach $300 by mid-next year, nearly tripling its current valuation. Morgan Stanley was among the investment banks that facilitated SpaceX's public offering last month.

Earlier in the week, SpaceX reported a net loss of $541 million, or 9 cents per share, for the three months ending in June. This figure was less than half of what financial analysts had projected. Concurrently, revenue surged to $7.8 billion, marking an increase of over 90% compared to the same period in the prior year.

The company also disclosed a substantial increase in expenditures for research and development and infrastructure, with significant investments directed towards artificial intelligence and other major projects. This heightened capital spending in technology sectors has contributed to investor nervousness and recent market sell-offs.

In June, Musk conducted the first-ever public sale of SpaceX shares, constituting the largest initial public offering on record. At its peak, the stock reached $225 per share, briefly elevating Musk to trillionaire status. However, the subsequent decline in share value has erased hundreds of billions in market capitalization, with the stock now trading below its initial offering price of $135.
