SpaceX Faces Investor Scrutiny in First Earnings Call as Public Company

Investors in Elon Musk's SpaceX will have the opportunity to question the CEO during the company's first quarterly earnings call since becoming a public entity. The call comes as SpaceX shares have fallen by half from their June peak, with investors reportedly concerned about Musk's projections for the company's future.

SpaceX shares closed Monday at $114.46, a significant drop from the peak of $225 in June and below the initial public offering (IPO) price of $135. This decline comes amid investor concerns about future prospects and ahead of a lockup provision expiration later this week. On Thursday, over 900,000 shares held by company insiders will become available for trading, more than doubling the current trading volume. This lockup expiration is the first of several scheduled over the coming months.

Financial Performance and Outlook

SpaceX is experiencing substantial financial losses. Net losses for the first half of the current year are projected to exceed the more than $5 billion in losses recorded for the entirety of last year. For the second quarter ending in June, analysts surveyed by FactSet expect SpaceX to report a net loss of $1.9 billion, or 23 cents per share. Despite these losses, some analysts anticipate a strong rebound in the latter half of the year that could return the company to profitability.

Key Development Areas

During the earnings call, Musk is expected to address several key areas of SpaceX's operations. These include the progress of testing the Starship rockets, which NASA intends to use for future lunar missions. His plans for the Starlink satellite network, a significant revenue generator for the company with global contracts, are also likely to be a topic of discussion. Additionally, Musk may be questioned about prospects for establishing football-field-sized data centers in orbit.

SpaceX's ventures also include a money-losing artificial intelligence business, known for its Grok tool, and the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Rumors of a potential merger between SpaceX and Tesla have also circulated, though neither company has confirmed such plans, and Musk has previously stated that securities regulations prevent him from discussing the matter.

Starship Testing and Starlink Operations

Following an earlier launch attempt, the Starship rocket successfully deployed satellites into orbit during a test late last month. Future tests may involve utilizing large arms at the Starbase launch site in Texas to retrieve the rocket and its booster upon their return to Earth. The Starlink satellite internet service is identified as a major contributor to the company's revenue stream.
