Sony to End Disc Releases for PlayStation Games in 2028
The company is shifting entirely to digital distribution as online sales increasingly dominate.
Sony will cease production of physical discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028, completing a transition to digital distribution. This move reflects a significant industry-wide shift, with digital downloads comprising approximately 80% of Sony's full-game software sales in fiscal year 2025.
New PlayStation titles launched from January 2028 will be available exclusively through the PlayStation Store and through retailers in digital formats. This change will not affect games that have already been released or are scheduled for disc release prior to this date.
In related news, Sony announced plans to begin shutting down the PlayStation Store for its older PS3 and PS Vita devices. Service will commence with select markets this year, with a global expansion planned for 2027. The company cited that the 15- to 20-year-old consoles can no longer support the secure payment systems required by the modern PlayStation Network.
Upon the closure of these digital storefronts, users will be unable to purchase new content. However, previously acquired games and downloadable content will remain available for download indefinitely. The PS3 store's closure will begin in August in markets including Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with additional Latin American and Middle Eastern markets to follow later in the year. The PS3 and PS Vita stores in all remaining regions are slated to close in July 2027.
