Sky Acquires ITV Media and Entertainment Arm for £1.6 Billion

Sky has agreed to purchase ITV's media and entertainment division for up to £1.6 billion, a move that aims to establish a significant competitor in the streaming market against global players such as Netflix and Disney Plus. The acquisition, which has been in talks for months, was initiated by American-owned Comcast, the parent company of Sky, in November of the previous year.

This transaction marks one of the largest takeovers in British media history. It encompasses ITV's broadcast channels and its ITVX streaming service, but notably excludes ITV's production arm, ITV Studios. This studio division, responsible for producing popular shows like "I’m A Celebrity" and "Mr Bates Vs The Post Office," will operate as an independent global content business. ITV Studios will be listed on the London Stock Exchange and has secured a long-term agreement to supply content to the newly combined Sky and ITV entity.

Sky Group chief executive Dana Strong described the deal as "a defining moment for British media," emphasizing the increasing importance of scale in the competitive landscape shaped by global streaming giants and platforms like YouTube. She stated that combining Sky and ITV's media and entertainment operations merges free-to-air television, pay TV, and streaming, ensuring continued access to British programming.

Viewers are assured that popular programs such as "Coronation Street," "Emmerdale," "Love Island," and "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!" will remain available with no immediate changes to their viewing experience. These shows will continue to be broadcast on ITV and ITVX and produced by ITV Studios. ITV is legally obligated to provide a free-to-air service until at least 2034 under its public service broadcasting license.

The integrated streaming platform is projected to reach over 16 million viewers monthly. While the companies have not confirmed specific numbers, the deal is understood to potentially impact corporate and commercial roles within ITV. The agreement is pending approval from shareholders and regulatory bodies.
