Single Mother Loses $405,000 Home Deposit as Construction Firm Collapses
Virginia Fletcher, a single mother of 11, is left with nothing after Beechwood Homes Constructions entered liquidation before her dream home could be built.
Virginia Fletcher, a single mother of 11, has lost her $405,000 deposit for a new home after the construction company, Beechwood Homes Constructions, collapsed into liquidation in May. Fletcher paid the deposit in January 2025, with construction expected to begin by Christmas. However, work never commenced on the property.
Fletcher discovered the parent company, Beechwood Homes Group, had entered liquidation with nearly $30 million in debt and numerous unfinished projects. She was informed by the liquidator that she is unlikely to recover any of her money, as she is considered an unsecured creditor with insufficient assets to cover the debt. The liquidator advised her to start a fundraising campaign.
"I've got nothing to go to. Who will rent to someone with so many kids?" Fletcher told The Daily Telegraph. "I try to put on a brave face for my children, but I am not OK."
Fletcher had sold her previous home to pay off approximately $143,000 in debt and now faces financial hardship, unable to afford a deposit for another property. Six of her 11 children, the youngest being seven years old, still live with her.
"The financial loss has affected every part of my life and has had a significant impact on my children," she stated. "I struggle to get out of bed on many days, and I often cry myself to sleep."
She claims her funds were deposited into the company's operating account instead of a trust account and were spent within 35 days of payment. "Today, the only item I have to show for the $405,000 I paid is a single tap on my empty block of land," she said.
Beechwood Homes (NSW) was placed into court-ordered liquidation on May 6. Six related companies, including Cavasinni Holdings and Beechwood Homes Australia, were placed into voluntary liquidation in June. Reports suggest Beechwood Homes (NSW) owed at least $1.4 million to unsecured creditors, in addition to $8.5 million to the National Australia Bank (NAB). The six companies in voluntary administration reportedly owe a combined $20.9 million.
NAB, which appointed independent controllers to the company, stated that it is working with those affected to provide information and clarify available options. Fletcher has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her family and to serve as a warning to others. "I paid Beechwood Homes [Constructions] $405,000 in good faith, believing I was entering into a building contract and that my money would be protected," she said.
