Shona Joy Fashion Label to Cease Operations After 26 Years

Australian fashion label Shona Joy will close its doors at the end of the year, concluding 26 years of business. Founder Shona Thatcher announced the decision to staff, stating her desire to focus on personal life and family.

Established in 2000, Shona Joy gained recognition for its formal and bridal collections. Thatcher explained that the increasing demands of running the growing business, coupled with her commute from Byron Bay to Sydney, made it unsustainable to balance with her role as a mother to young children.

"There was always going to be a day when I thought, 'That's enough now.' I've done extremely well, and I'm proud of what we've built over the past 26 years," Thatcher told the Australian Financial Review. "The business has grown so much, and I can't manage being a mum as well. I want to step back. I'm successful, and I want to end [the business] on a successful note. I'm proud that I can do that."

Thatcher clarified that the closure is not due to financial difficulties impacting other women's labels in Australia. Shona Joy reported over $12.5 million in sales in 2025, with its La Lune dress collection being particularly popular. The brand's designs were distributed in 33 countries, including the United States, through retailers such as David Jones, Bloomingdale's, and The Iconic.

The label operated solely through its website, which will remain accessible until the new year. The closure is expected to affect 33 staff members, all of whom will receive their entitlements.
