Severn Trent Shareholders to Fund £98 Million in Wastewater Upgrades After Regulator Finds Breaches

The water regulator Ofwat has found Severn Trent in breach of its wastewater duties, citing "serious and unacceptable" failures in the company's handling of sewage. Shareholders will now fund a £98 million investment in infrastructure upgrades to address the issues.

Ofwat announced the findings following an investigation launched in July 2024 into how Severn Trent, which serves over 8 million households in England and Wales, manages its wastewater and sewage networks. The regulator determined that the company had failed to adequately maintain systems and processes to meet its statutory duties.

Despite the breaches, Ofwat will not impose a financial penalty. This decision was based on Severn Trent's proactive approach in identifying and addressing the problems before the investigation was formally opened. The company has already begun significant remedial work, which has led shareholders to invest £98 million in direct infrastructure improvements.

These improvements include adding capacity at 65 wastewater treatment sites and increasing storage at storm overflows. Ofwat's senior director for enforcement, Lynn Parker, stated that Severn Trent's response "sets a standard we expect from all companies: identifying the problem, proactively investing to fix it and co-operating openly with the regulator."

Severn Trent's chief executive, James Jesic, acknowledged Ofwat's findings, noting that the company had proactively identified and begun addressing the issues. He emphasized the ongoing investment program focused on spill reduction and the company's commitment to further improvements for customers and the environment.

This is Ofwat's eighth case concerning wastewater and sewage network management across the industry, with previous enforcement actions resulting in fines and packages totaling over £300 million. Severn Trent's shares saw a slight decline of 1.77% on the morning of the announcement.
