Severn Trent Avoids Fine for Wastewater Failures After Proactive Action

Water company Severn Trent has avoided a direct fine for wastewater failures after the regulator Ofwat accepted an enforceable package of undertakings. The decision comes as part of Ofwat's industry-wide investigation into the management of wastewater and sewage networks.

Ofwat stated that unlike previous cases, Severn Trent proactively identified problems within its own network and initiated corrective actions before the enforcement case was formally opened. This proactive approach led to the acceptance of undertakings designed to ensure the company returns to compliance.

James Jesic, Severn Trent's chief executive, acknowledged Ofwat's findings, stating, "We accept Ofwat's findings relating to issues that we proactively identified and began addressing these before the enforcement case was opened." He added that the company's investment program in spill reduction is continuing across its region with organizational and supply chain support.

The investigation by Ofwat has previously resulted in fines and enforcement packages exceeding £300 million across the water industry, including a £104.5 million fine for Thames Water. Severn Trent, which serves areas including the West Midlands and parts of the East Midlands, confirmed that its work on reducing spills is ongoing.

Ofwat has formally accepted the enforceable package of undertakings from Severn Trent Water to ensure the company returns to compliance. The water firm took what the regulator described as "genuine accountability" for breaching its wastewater obligations.
