Santander Unveils 8% Regular Saver, But Key Conditions Apply
The new account offers a high headline rate, but experts urge savers to examine the terms and compare it with other options.
Santander has introduced a new regular savings account with a headline interest rate of 8%, though this includes a 5% temporary boost that lasts for the first year. The account allows monthly deposits of up to £200 and offers the flexibility of withdrawals without penalty.
To be eligible for the 8% rate, customers must hold a Santander current account, although a full switch is not mandatory. The bank is also offering a £180 incentive for customers who do switch their current account using the Current Account Switch Service (CASS).
This move by Santander follows a trend of high-street banks offering competitive savings deals as they aim to attract new customers. Last week, HSBC launched a switching offer that provides £220 to eligible individuals.
Understanding Regular Savings Accounts
Rachel Springall, a finance expert at Moneyfacts, noted that regular savings accounts are designed to encourage a consistent saving habit by allowing individuals to build up a fund gradually. However, she cautioned that these accounts may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with larger sums to deposit, as some can be restrictive.
Santander's offering is presented as less restrictive than some alternatives. While the account continues beyond the initial 12 months, the interest rate drops significantly to 3% after the first year. This suggests savers may need to move their funds to a different account to maintain a higher rate.
Comparing Savings Options
Compared to First Direct's 12-month regular saver, which offers 7% interest on monthly deposits up to £300 and prohibits withdrawals, Santander's account has a lower monthly deposit limit but allows access to funds. If a saver deposited £200 monthly into the Santander account for a year, they would accrue £104 in interest. In contrast, depositing the maximum £300 monthly into the First Direct account would yield £136.50 in interest over the same period.
The choice between accounts ultimately depends on individual savings goals and the need for immediate access to funds. It is also important to note that interest earned on savings accounts is taxable, unless held within a tax-free Cash ISA. For those seeking an ISA, Trading 212 is currently offering a rate of 4.51%, including a temporary 0.91% boost.
Maximizing Rewards
Personal finance expert Kate Steere highlighted potential ways to maximize returns with Santander. The Santander Edge account, for example, carries a £3 monthly fee but provides access to its Edge saver at 6% on balances up to £4,000. With maximum deposits, this could generate £240 in interest over a year, in addition to 1% cashback up to £10 per month (£120 annually). Combining this with the new regular saver's 8% rate on £200 monthly deposits could add another £104 in interest, alongside the £180 current account switch incentive.
Experts emphasize that savers should prioritize choosing an account that best fits their personal financial situation rather than solely chasing the highest headline incentive.
