Saks Rebrands as Exemplar Luxury Group After Bankruptcy Restructuring

Luxury retailer Saks Global has rebranded as Exemplar Luxury Group (ELG) following its emergence from a five-month Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company aims to revitalize its business through a new name, fresh leadership, and a strategy centered on long-term growth in the luxury market.

ELG announced it has cut its debt by nearly 75% as part of the restructuring process and secured $500 million in new exit financing. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in January after experiencing over a year of declining sales, accumulating debt, and defaulting on payments to vendors. This period followed its December 2024 merger with Neiman Marcus, an event orchestrated by real estate tycoon Richard Baker, which contributed to cash shortfalls and strained relationships with key luxury suppliers.

According to court filings at the time of its bankruptcy, Saks owed significant amounts to major brands, including $136 million to Chanel, $60 million to Kering, and $26 million to LVMH. The company entered Chapter 11 with $3.4 billion in debt.

As part of the overhaul, ELG has significantly reduced its store footprint. The company now operates 49 stores across its three banners: 33 Neiman Marcus locations, 15 Saks Fifth Avenue stores, and the Bergdorf Goodman flagship in New York City. This is a reduction from approximately 170 locations prior to the bankruptcy filing. The Off 5th discount chain has been largely wound down, with only 12 stores remaining to manage excess inventory.

ELG's revamped ownership structure includes representation from investment firms Pentwater Capital Management and Bracebridge Capital, which supported Saks through its restructuring. CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck stated that the new name, Exemplar Luxury Group, signifies the company's commitment to high-end retail across all its brands. The Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman store names and logos will remain unchanged.

Looking forward, ELG plans to cultivate more distinct identities for each of its retail brands, enhance personalized customer service, and leverage its sales force of over 1,500 associates. A priority will be rebuilding relationships with luxury vendors and adhering to agreed-upon payment terms. Van Raemdonck expressed an objective for the company to achieve double-digit EBITDA.
