Saks Global Rebrands as Exemplar Luxury Group After Emerging From Bankruptcy

Saks Global has officially emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, rebranding as Exemplar Luxury Group (ELG) under a new ownership structure. The company’s restructuring, which lasted nearly five months, involved reducing its debt by approximately 75% and narrowing its retail footprint to focus exclusively on luxury offerings.

The company filed for bankruptcy protection in January, citing struggles with weak sales, mounting debt, and defaults on vendor payments that had persisted for over a year. At the time of its filing, Saks Global carried $3.4 billion in debt. The recent difficulties were exacerbated by a December 2024 merger with Neiman Marcus, orchestrated by real estate tycoon Richard Baker, which reportedly led to cash shortfalls, inventory issues, and strained relationships with key suppliers such as Chanel, LVMH, and Kering.

Exemplar Luxury Group’s reconstituted board will include two representatives each from Pentwater Capital Management and Bracebridge Capital, investment firms that partnered with Saks during the restructuring process. ELG’s new strategy centers on high-end retail, following the closure of most of its off-price locations as part of the reorganization.
