Saks Global Rebrands as Exemplar Luxury Group After Emerging from Bankruptcy
The parent company of Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman has reduced debt and secured new financing, aiming for a more focused strategy on affluent consumers.
Saks Global, the parent company overseeing luxury retailers Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman, has officially exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company announced its emergence Friday, adopting a new name, Exemplar Luxury Group, and a restructured operational strategy.
This rebranding signifies a strategic shift following a period of financial difficulty, including nearly 75% debt reduction and the securing of $500 million in additional financing. CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck stated that the company is poised for a "bright future" with improved funding and equity.
Exemplar Luxury Group's new name reflects its commitment to providing an "exemplary shopping experience." This includes offering premium merchandise, enhancing personalized customer service with the assistance of its sales associates, and leveraging customer data. The company highlighted that over 1,500 sales associates have each achieved over $1 million in sales.
The luxury group had filed for bankruptcy protection in January, citing increased competition and the significant debt incurred from its acquisition of Neiman Marcus in July 2024. Prior to the bankruptcy filing, the company operated 33 Saks stores, 36 Neiman Marcus locations, the Bergdorf Goodman store on Fifth Avenue, and approximately 70 Saks Off 5th discount stores.
Following the restructuring, Exemplar Luxury Group now operates 49 stores in total: 15 Saks Fifth Avenue locations, 33 Neiman Marcus stores, and the Bergdorf Goodman store. The company has also reduced its Saks Off 5th discount store footprint, now operating 12 outlets.
During its restructuring, Exemplar Luxury Group collaborated with Pentwater Capital Management and Bracebridge Capital. Both firms will each have two representatives on the seven-person board of directors. In addition to van Raemdonck, the board will include former Ulta Beauty CEO Dave Kimbell and Philippe Schaus, former Global CEO of Moët Hennessy.
