Royal Parks Gardeners Set to Strike Over Pay Dispute

Gardeners employed by Idverde, a subcontractor for The Royal Parks in London, have voted to strike over a pay dispute, according to their union, GMB.

The workers rejected a proposed pay rise of 70 pence per hour for skilled gardeners and team leaders, which the GMB described as "an insult."

The eight Royal Parks in London include Bushy Park, Green Park, Greenwich Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent's Park-Primrose Hill, Richmond Park, and St James's Park.

The GMB stated that skilled gardeners and team leaders at The Royal Parks are currently paid 55 pence per hour above the London Living Wage, which is set at £14.80 per hour. The union accused Idverde of failing to recognize the workers' skills and experience, and of treating the London Living Wage as a ceiling rather than a floor.

"Our members create and maintain these amazing spaces and to be offered 70p [extra per hour] is just an insult," said Anna Lee, GMB regional organiser. "They are skilled, experienced professionals and they know what their labour is worth. We're calling on Idverde to get back round the table and offer our members a fair pay deal."

The union reported a 75% turnout for the vote, with 95% of members voting in favor of strike action.

A spokesperson for The Royal Parks stated that pay is a matter for Idverde, adding, "We recognise that this is a matter of concern for those involved and hope that a constructive resolution can be reached." Idverde has been contacted for comment.
