Roger Federer's Net Worth Dips Below Billion-Dollar Mark
The tennis icon's fortune has fallen to approximately $949 million due to a decline in shares of the sneaker company On Holding.
Roger Federer, the celebrated 20-time Grand Slam champion, has seen his net worth drop to an estimated $949 million, according to Forbes. This decrease marks a shift from his previously held billionaire status, primarily driven by a significant decline in the share price of On Holding, the sneaker company in which Federer holds a substantial stake. The drop in On Holding's stock value followed disappointing quarterly sales reported by the company.
Despite the dip, the retired tennis superstar continues to possess considerable assets, reflecting a lifestyle commensurate with significant wealth. These holdings include extensive real estate in Switzerland, a reported penthouse in Dubai, and consistent access to private aviation.
Federer's property portfolio features a prominent penthouse in Dubai's Le Rêve skyscraper, reportedly acquired for up to $23.5 million in 2014. The five-bedroom residence, spanning approximately 6,100 square feet, includes en-suite bathrooms, marble flooring, coffered ceilings, and expansive views of the Dubai Marina. Residents of the building have access to a concierge service offering amenities such as chauffeured limousines, Ferraris, helicopters, and private jets.
In his native Switzerland, Federer has developed a notable real estate presence. In 2008, he purchased a property in the Alpine village of Valbella, replacing the original structure with a custom-built chalet that features open living spaces and a tennis court. Swiss media reports from 2022 indicated that Federer still owned this property and an adjacent chalet, reportedly connected by an underground passage.
One of Federer's most significant real estate endeavors is a large development on the shores of Lake Zurich in Rapperswil-Jona. He acquired the lakefront site and began a substantial construction project, which Swiss media reported was still underway in 2024. The development encompasses approximately 17,000 square meters and includes plans for multiple buildings.
Federer's lifestyle also extends to aviation, with a long-standing relationship with NetJets, dating back to 2004, providing him access to private aviation services. While he is described as an ambassador and owner with the company, there is no confirmed evidence that he personally owns an entire private jet.
Financially, Federer accumulated $130.6 million in career prize money. However, his earnings from off-court activities, particularly endorsements and business ventures, are estimated by Forbes to be around $1 billion. A significant component of this off-court income was a reported 10-year, $300 million deal with Uniqlo signed in 2018.
Federer's investment in On Holding, made in 2019 when he joined the company as an investor and "co-entrepreneur," is considered his most lucrative venture. This equity stake was instrumental in elevating his net worth into billionaire territory as On's valuation surged, before the recent stock decline.
Scott Martin, a partner at Kingsview Wealth Management, highlighted Federer's strategic approach to wealth creation, noting his focus on ownership stakes in businesses rather than solely maximizing endorsement income. Martin stated that income and wealth are distinct, with income derived from prize money and endorsements, while lasting wealth is generated through ownership of appreciating assets, exemplified by Federer's investment in On Holding.
